Mississippi State Fires Head Coach Zach Arnett After Dismal Season

Arnett's Tenure Cut Short After Struggles on the Field

Former Defensive Coordinator Led Bulldogs to 3-9 Record in 2023

After a disappointing season that saw the team finish with a dismal 3-9 record, Mississippi State has fired head football coach Zach Arnett. Arnett, who had previously served as the Bulldogs' defensive coordinator for three seasons, was promoted to the top job after the tragic passing of Mike Leach in December 2022.

Arnett's brief tenure as head coach was marked by struggles on the field, as the team failed to live up to expectations under his leadership. The Bulldogs suffered several close losses during the season, including a heart-wrenching defeat to rival Ole Miss in the Egg Bowl.

Arnett's dismissal comes as little surprise, as the team's underwhelming performance under his guidance had led to growing dissatisfaction among fans and observers alike. Mississippi State is now tasked with finding a new head coach who can rebuild the program and restore it to its former glory.

At the time of his firing, Arnett was the youngest head coach in the Southeastern Conference. He had previously earned a reputation as a promising young coach during his time as Mississippi State's defensive coordinator, but his lack of head coaching experience ultimately proved to be a major obstacle in his first season at the helm.

Mississippi State will begin a search for a new head coach immediately. The university has not yet announced a timeline for the process, but it is expected to be completed before the start of the 2024 season.
